PDF save dialog opened but no file appeared
RecallBase can open the browser PDF or print save dialog, but browsers do not tell the extension whether the user completed or canceled the final save.
Symptom
The PDF dialog appeared, but you cannot find the final PDF file.
Most likely cause
The browser save dialog was canceled, saved to a different folder, or blocked by browser print settings.
Fix it
Repeat the export and choose a known folder. If needed, use browser print preview settings to save as PDF.
- 1
Open Export Studio.
- 2
Choose PDF.
- 3
Select Save as PDF in the browser dialog.
- 4
Choose a known folder.
- 5
Confirm the file exists.
Verify it worked
Open the folder you selected and confirm the PDF exists.
What RecallBase cannot verify
RecallBase cannot detect final PDF save completion or locate files saved by the browser.
Why this is hard to detect
The browser owns the final print and save dialog. RecallBase can prepare the printable document and open the dialog, but the extension does not receive a reliable signal that tells it where the user saved the file, whether the dialog was canceled, or whether the browser redirected the output to a different destination.
Browser settings to check
Most missing PDF reports come down to destination, folder, or dialog state. Check whether the browser was set to Save as PDF, whether it used a default downloads folder, and whether another print destination was selected. If the dialog opened in a background window, the export may be waiting for a choice rather than failing.
- 1
Repeat the export from Export Studio with a short conversation.
- 2
Choose Save as PDF in the browser dialog.
- 3
Select a known folder such as Downloads or Desktop.
- 4
Use the browser downloads shelf or history to locate the saved file.
- 5
If the file is still missing, export Markdown to preserve the content and retry PDF later.
What to report
If you need help, report the browser name, operating system, export entry point, and whether the print dialog appeared. Do not send the generated PDF or conversation content unless you have removed sensitive information yourself.
