Save AI conversations

Saving keeps a conversation in browser-local storage first. Exporting creates a file or sends the conversation to an explicit destination such as Notion or Obsidian.

Chats save automatically as you talk

On a supported AI chat page — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and the rest — you do not press a save button. RecallBase watches the conversation and saves it automatically; auto-save is on by default. Each new message you send or receive updates the same Memories entry, so a growing conversation never turns into duplicates.

The floating button at the page edge shows the capture status: Auto-save is on, Saving, or Saved in browser. Clicking it opens the side panel with the conversation already inside. To pause automatic saving, open the extension options and turn off Auto-save under General; while it is off, nothing is saved until you export — every export captures the conversation first, so an export always has the latest messages.

Save versus export

Saving keeps a local browser record. Exporting is a deliberate action: it creates a document, image, text, or JSON file, or sends the conversation to an app you select, such as Notion or Obsidian.

Browser-local storage

Saved captures live in browser-local storage first. That makes saving fast. It also means you should export important conversations before you uninstall the extension, clear browser storage, or switch browser profiles.

Limits

Free and Pro both allow unlimited local saves. Export limits apply only to selected formats.

What a local save is for

A local save is the starting point for later export and review. It keeps a conversation available in the extension without forcing you to choose PDF, Word, Notion, Google Docs, or another destination right away. Save locally when you want to capture now and pick the final format later.

How to verify a save

After saving, reopen the popup and find the conversation in Memories. Check the title, source app, and timestamp instead of relying on memory. If the entry is missing, confirm the page was a supported conversation and that browser extension storage was not cleared.

Search and filter saved chats

The Memories list in the popup has a search box and a filter panel. Search matches saved conversations and shows how many are shown. The filter panel narrows the list by date range and platform. For a wider view, open the side panel: it shows the same Memories list with search and Select controls.

To export several saved chats at once, use Select mode: tick conversations in the Memories list, then pick a batch export to Markdown, Obsidian, Notion, or Google Docs. See Select conversations for batch export.

What not to assume

A browser save is not a RecallBase remote backup. If you uninstall the extension, clear browser storage, or move to another browser profile, local browser data can be removed. Export important conversations to a file you control before making browser storage changes.
